Twitter – teaching tool or merely a distraction?

I have been using Twitter for some years now but recently I have found that it can be more of a procrastination tool…I can feel as though I am working instead of actually getting work done! A former line manager of mine called it “the best CPD there is” (free or otherwise) and for a while back there, I tended to agree.

The main problem is – where to start? If you haven’t used Twitter before, the whole prospect can be quite daunting, when really it is as simple as:

  • head to twitter.com
  • sign up for an account
  • click a few people to follow based on your interests
  • start reading!

After that, it’s about what you want to use it for – indeed, several of my former colleagues signed up for Twitter and then decided that they didn’t want work anywhere near it…it was more just for fun. I think you can use it for both, and Twitter will allow for multiple accounts if you want to keep work and social separate, or you can use the “lists” feature to help with this if you only want one login.
